tofino concert - pennybrook

Pennybrook

Tuesday, March 15, 2016
Jamie’s Rainforest Inn
Free • 9-11pm • All Ages

At once ancient sounding yet thoroughly modern, Pennybrook — from Nova Scotia’s South Shore — specializes in original instrumentals and old-fashioned songs. With Jude Pelley on fretted strings, Charlie Wilson on wooden flute, they have delighted audiences across the country with their sound — atmospheric, rich and complex, grounded in their love for Celtic dance music. They play traditional songs and tunes from both sides of the Atlantic and share original compositions from their playful and hopeful hearts. Jude and Charlie have been collaborating for five years; in 2011 they released The Edge of Waiting, a full length, independently produced album of original instrumental music; and then this Summer they plan to release their much anticipated second album.

tofino concert - blue moon marquee

Blue Moon Marquee

Friday / Saturday, March 18 / 19, 2016
Jacks Pub
Free • 9pm • 19+

Blue Moon Marquee is a Screamin’ & Hollerin’ Gypsy blues band that stem from the Alberta Dusty Hoodoos and the Rocky Mountains. A.W. Cardinal (vocals/guitar) and Jasmine Colette (vocals, bass, drums) primarily write and perform original compositions. Influenced by anything that swings, jumps or grooves. Blue Moon Marquee have perfected a live style of playing, a duo that sounds like a full band.

Blue Moon Marquee’s chemistry transcends the music itself and the way Colette’s angelic tones lift Wesley’s beaten down “Bukowski-esque mystique” is something that will surely stay in your head for a while and make a lasting impression.

tofino concert - viper central

Viper Central

Saturday, March 19
Black Rock Resort Ucluelet
7:30pm • $25 Adv. • $30 Door

Viper Central can rip it up bluegrass style with sweet n’ crunchy harmonies and tight melodic breaks that’ll make your heart soar, your feet shuffle and your blood curdle! Canadian roots and the traditions of American Bluegrass, Métis, Country, Rockabilly and Old-time have influenced their ever evolving style. The songs reflect Canadian landscape and experiences and the result is entirely natural, effortless and delightfully original. Viper Central is a five-piece acoustic string-band that takes that “high lonesome sound” to new places. All five band members contribute original songs, but won’t hesitate to deliver up their take on an ages-old mournful waltz or bring the house down with a barn-burning bluegrass standard.

Ora Cogan’s music is deliberate medicine for fresh sorrows. Her voice is hypnotizing as a candle flame. Her new album Shadowland is expected to release later this spring and is a supreme delight, featuring the enchanting songstress in a cocoon of vintage synth, romantic influence, and hypnotic drums. Equipped with tremendous song writing abilities, Cogan’s delivery is thorough and sweet as she takes us on a captivating odyssey.
