Born Ruffians (with Hey Ocean)
Saturday, December 2, 2006
The Tofino Legion
Tickets $12, Doors 9pm
A bewitching throb of cascading drums, you'd swear they were on the war path, till a pure rock and roll howl and sharp guitar hooks bring you back to the indie universe. Amidst the shouts and claps and the odd trombone slur, a tenderness somehow shrouds the whole thing, there's something saintly about them after all.
Formed in 2002, the indie rock trio creates a jaunty mix of shifty guitar riffs and hyper-chic vocals for a Pixies-esque shredded kind of sweetness. Born Ruffians have an ability to perfectly mix together spastic dance-punk with catchy, engaging melodies.
If there's any justice whatsoever in this world, the band will be the buzziest band in North America before the year is out.
Hey Oceans mellow
guitar grooves, eargasmic vocals, and upbeat jazzy licks keep listeners comfortably sitting, standing, or dancing, while they are washed out to sea and carefully brought back to shore. Passionate voices, pensive words, and frivolous fun keep this music honest and pure: from the heart, for the soul.
The quartet draws on influences from folk, reggae, funk, jazz, rock, hip hop, and more delivering finely crafted pop and funky freeform jams. Their music also borrows from several world music genres; due to the band members travels in Central America, Nepal, China and Europe.
