Taking Root details how Maathai mobilized women to rally against deforestation, poverty, embedded economic interests and government corruption becoming a national political force that helped to bring down Kenya's 240-year dictatorship. The film captures a world view in which nothing is perceived as impossible.

George is consoled by his closest friend, Charley (Julianne Moore), a 48 year old beauty who is wrestling with her own questions about the future.
