How to Cook Your Life
(Germany, 2007, Documentary, 94 min, Rated G)
Directed by Doris Dorrie

Taking “You are what you eat” to a whole new level.
How to Cook Your Life is a cheerful documentary about the art of cooking your life and your food without burning it, overcooking it, or putting too much salt in it. Doris Dorrie captures the Zen priest and chef, Edward Brown, the head cook at the Tassajara Mountain Centre in California, as he demonstrates that eating is more than just the intake of food. Brown, who has practiced Zen Buddhism and cooking for over 40 years, regularly punctuates his holiness with moments of self-deprecation and humour. His observations on modern culture and human foibles are often as hiliarious as they are profound. You will never again cut your vegetables the way you used to.

november 26, 2009Play with Fire

Clayoquot Community Theatre
Friday, November 26 | 8:00pm
2009, Canada, Drama, 84 minutes
Directed by Soren Johnstone

“Play with Fire” follows the unsettling life of 28-year old Christian. Having never left his small town, he wastes his days with meaningless activities and selling drugs to get by. His girlfriend, Melody, encourages him to come to the city with her in order to start over with a clean slate. Just as she leaves, his longtime friend Joel comes back to town bringing with him a risky plan that will help him fatten his wallet. All Joel needs is Christian’s help. This is where a story of twisted loyalty, love and loss begins.

“Play With Fire” is an experiment in micro budget filmmaking. Using natural light, non-actors, and locations of the town, the lens captured something that was not only raw and visceral, but something beautiful; something that transcended its location and touched the audience. “Play with Fire” is the heartbeat of many towns.

In the Loop
(UK, 2009, Comedy, 106 min, Rated 14)
Directed by Armando Iannucci

The US President and the UK Prime Minister fancy a war. But not everyone agrees that war is a good thing. US General Miller doesn't think so and neither does the British Secretary of State for International Development, Simon Foster. But, after Simon accidentally backs military action on TV, he suddenly has a lot of friends in Washington, DC. If Simon can get in with the right DC people, if his entourage of one can sleep with the right intern, and if they can both stop the Prime Minister's chief spin-doctor rigging the vote at the UN, they can halt the war. If they don't… well, they can always sack their Director of Communications who they never liked anyway and who's back home dealing with blocked drains and a man who's angry about a collapsing wall.
