tofino concert - dan mangan

december 4, 2010Dan Mangan

Saturday, December 4, 2010
Tofino Legion
Tickets $15 • Doors 9pm

Heralded as a favourite among Canada’s new breed of independent musicians, Dan Mangan was recently signed to Arts & Crafts, the trail-blazing indie label that brought us Broken Social Scene, Feist, and the Stars. Dan’s songs brim with subtle images and irreverent wit. He has a knack for making what is quaint seem universal and what is universal quaint, so that even his most layered lyrics feel strangely familiar. His gravelled voice conveys a rare type of honesty, a gift that transcends demographics. On stage, his presence is easy and open. It could work against him, but there’s no façade; here’s a talented, hard-working and unpretentious musician with a poet’s way of seeing through absurdity.

The Finnish-born flutist Soile Stratkauskas has recently moved to Victoria from London, England, where she played with several internationally-known period-instrument orchestras, such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Gabrieli Consort and Players. tofino concert - wil

december 11, 2010Wil

Saturday, December 11, 2010
Tofino Legion
Tickets $15 • Doors 9pm

With just his acoustic guitar, his drummer and his voice Wil belts out a sound that could come from a four piece band. He creates a powerful musical punch on stage that leaves his audiences reeling. His sound is “electro-acoustic”, he plugs into a smorgasbord of foot pedals. A clear acoustic guitar, overtop of distortion, with heavy bass tones filling out the bottom. His songwriting is packed with imagery, powerfully backed by brilliant, intricate guitar style and delivered by a commanding vocal that is truly inspirational. Wil Mimnaugh was always destined to be a musician. Born into a musical family — Wil’s mother was always singing along to the coveted record player or belting out duets accompanied by Wil’s father on guitar — song rhythms were stomped out on the kitchen floor late into the weekend nights.

tofino concert - morgan davis

december 11, 2010Morgan Davis

Saturday, December 11, 2010
Maquinna Pub
Doors 9pm

For nearly four decades Morgan Davis has been on the road travelling across Canada, the United States and Europe. His performances draw from a rich tradition of country blues, as well as his own contemporary songs infused with wit and a large dose of humour. Originally from Detroit, Davis grew up listening to a prolific mix of rhythm and blues. The music of Jimmy Reed, Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and Fats Domino was in the air. He later moved to California with his family, and then in 1968 left for Canada. Davis hit the road with the Rhythm Rockets, The Knights of The Mystic Sea, and David Wilcox's first band, eventually forming his own trio. Over the years he has had the privilege of opening for Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, John Hammond, Albert Collins, and Eric Bibb. A highlight of his career was backing the phenomenal Dr.John. Morgan has shared the stage with Colin Linden, who also produced his second album, James Harmon, Gene Taylor, Sue Foley, Ray Bonneville, Carlos DelJunco and the late Dutch Mason.

tofino concert - dj neighbour

december 31, 2010DJ Neighbour

Friday, December 31, 2010
Tofino Legion
Tickets $15 • Doors 9pm

Neighbour’s hybrid DJ / live performance tore across the continent this year, culminating in an incredible series of festival dates across western Canada, including headlining slots at Shambhala, Soundwave, Bass Coast Project, Astral Harvest, and Summer Break. In addition to playing almost 100% original production and remixes, Neighbour plays live synthesizer and electric guitar alongside his legendary DJ sets, which range from no-nonsense electric funk bangers to gorgeous technicolor remixes of classic garage, disco, and house music. Some people say that dance music isn’t as fun as it used to be; then again – some people just haven’t seen a grown man in a unitard shoot lasers out of his guitar far away into the night sky.
