There are many diverse types of performances and showings in Tofino, Ucluelet and in the Pacific Rim National Park.   • Admission: Free

Ed Peekeekoot is set to kick off the '09 Summer Festival with his blend of country, folk and jazz at both Tofino and Ucluelet's Canada day celebrations. Ed's foot stomping fiddle to virtuoso classical guitar will adorn each town's village greens while his humour and philosophy will surely compliment the festivities of the occasion.

 


july 2, 2009Superfantastics with Smalltown Empire

The Weigh West's Harbour Lounge greets Halifax duo Superfantastics with their indie pop sound that if compared might reign true to their eastern forefathers Sloan. Matthew MacDonald and Stephanie d'Entremont are touring in support of their second album which has landed them on the bill with Canadian greats such as The Weakerthans and The Constantines.

They are joined by Tofino's own duo, Smalltown Empire.

It's purely coincidental that the man known as 'the high priest of the bassoon' will play at the St Aidan Church on the hill in Ucluelet on July 4th. George Zukerman, also know as 'the only bassoonist with soul,' will be accompanied by piano player Leslie Janos. St Aidan's and the Clayoquot Sound Community Theatre offer intimate settings to enjoy a celebrated bassoonist and his accompaniment, one of the very few of his kind to be recognized outside the ranks of Symphony Orchestra.

This upbeat string trio is certain to entertain and engage audiences from 9 to 90 with their unique style, classical training, and modern performance. Twins Alex & Anthony Cheung, are joined by violinist Hohn "Adidam" Littlejohn to perform in the Tofino Botanical Gardens and Greenpoint Theatre, bringing audience a taste polished classical works and original jazz, Latin and hip hop arrangements.

Bring the whole family as we celebrate the successful completion of the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Establishment Project. Support and learn about greater environmental protection and sustainable livelihood creation at Wah-Nah-juss (Meares Island) and Ha'uukmin (Kennedy Lake) Tribal Parks. During the bbq, enjoy local aboriginal performances (6pm) with an outdoor dance following (8:30pm) and special guests DJ Ecos and DJ Cherie Bomb spinning tribal beats until 11pm.

Featuring musicians from Cuba, Venezuela, and Canada, this quartet has rapidly been building a reputation for it's exciting blend of progressive jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythm. Its members have played this music at the highest level, making contributions of their own internationally to the music as a whole. Enjoy this powerhouse quartet up close and personal in the Clayoquot Sound Community Theatre.

Since 1992, the group has gone on to become one of the most popular touring & performance groups in Western Canada. Equal parts dance, music and spectacle. Ache Brasil is committed to presenting high quality performances which best exemplify Brazil's rich cultural heritage. They will be joined in the Ucluelet School band room by local Capoeira master Professor Formiga.

SWARM presents musical and theatrical shows of invented instruments, experimental world music and intense physical choreography. The performers jump and spin about the stage twirling large-scale industrial drum sculptures. They evoke primal rhythms from the drums and ethereal soundscapes from a wide range of musical sculptures. The mesmerizing contemporary collage of music, movement and mass, thrills audiences of all ages. They'll be joined in the Tofino Community Hall by local funk exploration Shazam!

Acoustic Guitar Magazine likened MacDonald's vocals, lyrics, and intricate guitar style to 'a collaboration between Nick Drake and a mid-1970s Bruce Cockburn.' Ross deals in subtlety, intimacy and nuance with a tune-smiths hand that coins songs and music with a haunting and poignant quality. Hear him at the Darwin Cafe in the Tofino Botanical Gardens.

Dj roboforce uses an array of hardware & software odds and ends to make up giant danceable beats that blow up parties and border on analog insanity. He's teamed up with Tough Guys and Girls Cry, a three piece synth pop group that pull inspiration from the likes of punk, metal and indie varieties, for a show that will make you laugh, cry, dance and maybe more.
