Around new and full moon when the Sun, Moon and Earth form a line, the tidal force of to the Sun reinforces that of to the Moon. The resulting higher than usual tide as called a Spring Tide.

Most coastal areas experience two daily high (and two low) tides. This is because at the point right "under" the Moon (the sub-lunar point), the water is at its closest to the Moon, so it experiences stronger gravity and rises.
