Tofino Artist Pete Clarkson
Pete Clarkson has been a park warden for 23 years, working in the natural splendour of some of Canada's most beloved national parks. In 1998 he and his family moved to Tofino, to work at Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park. As he explored the park, he was moved by the endless assortment of flotsam washing ashore.Inspired by the popular coastal tradition of using beach-combed objects to make outdoor art, his first few pieces were created as fence art, but the work has since migrated indoors. The vibrant palette of colours and shapes, worn by water, spoke out to Peter. Each piece had a story, including the emotion of human connection and the drama of an ocean journey. As he tried to imagine their stories Pete bonded to the items.
Pete's art is difficult to classify. It's been called environmental art, beach art, found-object sculpture and recycled art. He has received a number of private commissions and his work is being collected across Canada. Like the tide itself, his work is unique and full of unexpected treasures.
Pete's art is on display at the gallery in the Tofino Botanical Gardens from Oct. 5 – Nov. 15th, 2005 and at www.peteclarkson.com
