Tofino Art: George Hunt Junior

Born in Campbell River, George descends from two families of internationally renowned master carvers. George departed from this rich heritage to find his own unique style that is reflected in his works.

His father was an early inspiration in his artistic career as was his maternal grandfather.

George enjoys working in many mediums including wood, skin, canvas, paper and precious metals. Some of George's best works are his original drum sculptures. In them he contrasts traditional design with dramatic background paintings that give his drums a mystique and haunting beauty. Many of these pieces are elaborately adorned with abalone inlay, copper, precious metals and intricate engraving.

Many of George's pieces find themselves used in ceremonial potlatches and traditional ceremonies. George also expresses himself through traditional Tlingit dance. He is well respected for his talent as a dancer and through it and his artwork he pays homage to the ancestors through our living legacy.
