April in Tofino
by Adam Buskard, Tofino
Spring is here!!! The whales are back along the coastline, the frogs are croaking in the ponds and puddles and migrant locals are returning from their travels all tanned and broke. There are plenty of events and programs to enjoy this month so be sure to get involved and be part of what makes Tofino so special.
For 7 years now Tofino has marked international Earth Day with community events. This year Earth Day will be greeted by a community eco-commute on the multi use path. Starting at the info center by Cox Bay at 7am, locals will walk, ride and run their way into town to finish at the Wickaninnish School.
The Wickaninnish Community School is proudly presenting their Art and Literacy Fair. This event will be showcasing the works of kindergarten to grade 7 students. A multi media of works will be presented from painting and illustrations to creative writing and poetry. There will viewing and judging of the Earth Day Logo and Essay contest. Refreshments and light snacks will be served, all are invited to attend.
The annual Earth Day Pancake Breakfast will be held Sunday April 26th from 9am to noon in the Village Green Gazebo. Scarf down stacks of hemp pancakes, organic maple syrup and gulp mugs of organic fair trade coffee to celebrate Earth Day! All meals are served on cane paper plates and bio-degradable corn plastic cutlery, but even better , bring your own plate. All funds generated through donations will go to the Raincoast Education Society - a non-profit society aimed at educating both children and adults about the natural environment.
The Pacific Rim Arts Society are excited to announce that April 19th to 25th will be the Random Acts of Art in Tofino and Ucluelet festival. It will be running in conjunction with the 10th Annual B.C. Arts and Culture week. The intent of this festival is to inspire artistic expression within our communities and bring some fun colour and inspiration into our lives. Be sure to look for more information in this issue of the magazine and around town.
For the 2nd year there will be a Earth Day Weekend of events from April 25th to 27th. Many many exciting things will be happening from kayak trips to live concerts to interpretive walks with the Raincoast Education Society. For More information on the weekend check out www.earthdaytofino.ca
