Tofino in June
by Adam Buskard, Tofino
It may not feel like it right now, but summer is around the corner! Dust off your flip-flops, break out the sunscreen, and get ready for an amazing season of Tofino at its best!
Raincoast Host
Is Lone Cone really a volcano? Why is Clayoquot Sound a Unesco Biosphere Reserve? What can I do to help local wildlife? Discover the answers to these questions and many more during the Raincoast Host program. Raincoast Host is a one-day course in local ecology and cultural history. The course enables participants to answer commonly-asked questions about the environments, communities and cultures of the Clayoquot Biosphere region, and deliver key messages about how to explore the area safely and respectfully. Don't miss this great staff-training opportunity! This year the Raincoast Education Society (RES) is offering two full-day courses - one in Tofino and one in Ucluelet. And, for those who can't attend a full-day, we are also splitting the course into four evening sessions, from which you can choose to take all four or just one or two. For more info and to register please email us at info@raincoasteducation.org, call the res at 250.725.2560 or check out our website at www.raincoasteducation.org
Surf Competition
Now four years strong, The Rip Curl Stew is a two-day, judged surf contest held in the heart of Cox Bay, Tofino, BC. After four successful years, with 90 competitors and 750 visitors last year, and with the fever growing steadily, Rip Curl Canada and a team of eager sponsors are ready to serve up even more stew! Check out the live beach entertainment, surfboard and wetsuit demos, a skateboard ramp on the beach, and activities for kids. The contest will include 7 categories, including open categories for men, women & children, allowing surfers at all levels & ages to showcase their talent! With the estimated number of competitors in attendance being close to 100 this year, it is lining up to be an unforgettable weekend! There will be $20,000 worth of cash and prizes along with prize packs filled with amazing goods. Oh, and the event theme? "Stew" will be readily available on the beach, by donation to feed the masses, with all proceeds going to non-profit, Surfrider foundation.
Edge to Edge Marathon
On June 13, the Edge to Edge Marathon will have an all-time record number of runners participating in the event. With the record number of runners, comes a need for an increased number of volunteers to ensure a smooth, safe and successful race. We need certified traffic control volunteers to join our team. Over the past couple years, the Ucluelet Chamber of Commerce has certified a number of people for highway traffic control work. If you have been certified and are available Sunday June 13th, we'd like to hear from you. If you need to re-certify the Chamber is offering free certifications with the condition that you will join us on race day as part of our traffic management team. You can reach us at 250.726.4641 or drop by the Chamber office downtown beside the CIBC. There are many other volunteer positions available for anyone interested and willing to give a day to the Edge to Edge.We need; start/finish line support, water station, registration, refreshment table attendants, and set-up/tear down crews. We are very fortunate to have a number of returning volunteer coordinators who's past efforts and experience are greatly valued and appreciated.
