Keep Clayoquot Wild
A Presentation by Friends of Clayoquot Sound
Clayoquot Community Theatre, Tofino
Sunday, March 16, 2008 • 5:30 pm
15 years have passed since over 12,000 people set up blockades to stop the logging of ancient forests in Clayoquot Sound. The peaceful protests became world news; almost 1,000 protesters were arrested trying to save the ancient trees. Before the world exposure in 1993, few people had heard of Clayoquot Sound. Today, one million people visit the area each year. What is so special about this place? What makes this ecosystem so globally rare? Isn't it protected? Join the FOCS for a 60 minute presentation called "Keep Clayoquot Wild". A striking slideshow will cover the biological, geographical and political environment, and the significance of, and pressures on, this globally rare jewel. Geared toward educators, but open to everyone. All attending will receive a beautiful Clayoquot Sound poster, a CD of images, and learning resources!
From Zero to 3,000 in 30 years!
Sea Otters on the West Coast of Vancouver Island
Clayoquot Community Theatre, Tofino
Sunday, March 16, 2008 • 7 pm
Sea otters were commercially hunted throughout much of their northern Pacific Ocean range in the late 1700s and early 1800s, almost to extinction. After a virtual absence of over 200 years, they were reintroduced to the west coast of Vancouver Island in the early 1970s. Since then, their populations have expanded hugely, creating all kinds of change in the nearshore marine environment as well as within our human societies. Join local marine biologist Josie Osborne to learn about BC's history of sea otter hunting and the effects of their successful reintroduction. Sponsored by the Raincoast Education Society. The SPLAT Project: Protecting Red Legged Frogs On the Move
UAC Hall, Ucluelet
Monday, March 17, 2008 • 6 pm
w/ local ecologist Dr. Barb Beasley, a coastal ecologist involved in forest and marine conservation and part-time teaching at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre and North Island College. One of her passions is to protect amphibians from becoming "roadkill" (aka SPLATs) along Highway 4 between Ucluelet and Tofino. Each spring and fall, amphibians migrate on rainy nights. Six species are frequently killed while crossing the highway, including the Red-legged Frog (Rana aurora), a species of "special concern" in Canada. Since 2000, community volunteers and Parks Canada staff have assisted in surveying the highway for amphibian road-kills. In 2005, we installed three 90-m sections of temporary fence and pitfall traps on each side of the highway where lots of animals were being killed. Come find out how many frogs have been caught at the fences and released on the other side of the road. Learn more about what you can do to protect frogs and salamanders in their natural habitats!
