Tofino Artist Taryn O'Gorman

Taryn O’Gorman has been an island girl her whole life. Raised in Victoria, Taryn grew up with art as her strongest form of expression. The artistic force runs strong through her family with her mother practicing as a art therapist for most of Taryn’s life. It came as a natural course when she began to follow this inspiration as a career and way of life.

Taryn has worked on many levels to further her strengths as an artist. Formally she received an Associate of the arts from Camosun College and has studied at such schools as the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson and with Billy King in San Miguel De Allende, Mexico. It was this intensive study in Mexico that was the strongest influence for Taryn turning her attention mainly in the direction of jewelry.

Much of Taryn’s early work focused on textiles, fashion and costume design and construction. She was self taught in this field, going on to do major production work for Caravan Farm Theater in Armstrong B.C. and Leaky Heaven Circus in Vancouver.

Taryn notes science fiction kitch, pulp fiction, pin up girls and such artists as Charles Rene MacKintosh and the whole “Arts & Crafts/Art Nouveau” movement of the late 1800’s as a strong influences. Her work has an air of the ancient and future warped into one. It’s this fusion that catches your eye.
