Tofino Art Exhibit: Dawn Stofer

On presentation this month adorning the walls of Sobo in the Botanical Gardens are the original oil paintings of Island painter Dawn Stofer. Dawn studied Fine Art at the University of Victoria in British Columbia and Art and Education at the University of Calgary in Alberta. Still, she regards herself as largely self taught. She worked in film and television for 12 years, juxtaposed with a rural lifestyle in the Fraser Valley of BC —raising and training horses, keeping animals of all description, and surrounded by nature, astonishing landscapes, and big weather.

In 1996, Dawn began painting on a full time basis. Settling temporarily in London, England she had an exhibition of her work in 1998 where she met and befriended senior British painter Guy Roddon and was invited to sketch in the south of France. Then returning to Vancouver she exhibited for two years at the Deborah Worsfold Gallery.

Dawn now works from her home studio and has opened Stofer Gallery on beautiful Denman Island on the west coast of Canada.
