You can be sure it’s Spring when you see flocks of shorebirds darting along our shoreline. Every year beginning in mid-to-late April flocks of sandpipers, plovers, whimbrels, and many other shorebirds pass through the Tofino area.


Friday, April 28th, 2006


7:30 pm at the RIC * "Eat here and die - how migrant sandpipers acquire food while avoiding falcon predators":
A presentation by guest speaker Andrea Pomeroy, graduate student at SFU. Andrea's love of nature and ecology have led her into graduate studies about the feeding decisions made by migrant western sandpipers at stopover sites in the Georgia Basin/Puget Sound region.


Saturday, April 29th, 2006


10 am • Shorebird Viewing at Chesterman Beach

Look for the spotting scopes and naturalists around mid-Chesterman beach. Everyone welcome, rain or shine. View some local shorebird migrants with Andrea Pomeroy and other local naturalists.


1 pm • Shorebird Viewing at Wickaninnish Beach

Learn more about migrating shorebirds. Join senior park interpreter Silva Johannson for a look into the lives of migrating shorebirds in the Pacific Rim National Park. Meet at the flagpole near the Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre.


2 pm • "The Best Places to Make-Out in the Pacific Rim Area!"
Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

A presentation by park warden Pete Clarkson about Black Oystercatchers and their nesting habitats. Pete coordinates the monitoring program for seabirds and shorebirds in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.


7:30 pm • Shorebirds of Clayoquot Sound

Long Beach Lodge Resort, $5 Admission
Slideshow presentation with local & very talented photographer and naturalist Adrian Dorst

10 am to 2 pm • 'Tofino Mudflats Stewardship Celebration' at the Tofino Botanical Gardens!

Discover how the sea and land are inter-connected! Join local naturalists, the staff of the Raincoast Interpretive Centre and community groups involved in stewardship projects for a day of fun and activities.

Details: 10 am • 'Mudflat Mucking and Shorebird Spotting' - a children's program; 10:30 am to 12:30 pm * Guided walk with local naturalists, a Streamkeepers' demonstration and a chance to view maps and posters about the mudflats and eelgrass beds of Tofino's Wildlife Management Area (WMA); 12 pm - Shorebird Viewing Station on the mudflats. Everyone welcome; Donations appreciated. Rain or Shine ?

3 pm • Shorebird Viewing at Wickaninnish Beach

Film: Winged Migration
Directed by Jacques Perrin (MICROCOSMOS), Winged Migration is a dramatically beautiful documentary about bird migratory patterns, featuring breathtaking photography and hypnotic music.
