Fundraiser for Strawberry Isle Research Society

Strawberry Isle Research Society (SIRS) is a non-profit society specializing in monitoring the local marine environment. sirs is organizing a fund raising event to fund the mapping of all the eelgrass meadows in Clayoquot Sound. The society is planning a gala event to take place at the Tofino Legion on Friday, March 26.

Considering that Southern Clayoquot Sound proportionately has a greater hectorage of natural eelgrass meadows than any other location on the West Coast, the mapping project is indeed ambitious. Investigators, students, boats, planes and computers will have to be organized for up to two field seasons. In the winter months comes the big job of loading all the data into a computer where it will be superimposed onto an air photo mosaic of Clayoquot. From here the information goes out to other researchers, planners, educators and government agencies.
