Get Ready for Whale Festival!

by Jenn Machin, Tofino

the letter 'S'Spring splashes into Canada with the Pacific Rim Whale Festival! Join us March 19th through 27th as we celebrate the arrival of upwards of 20,000 grey whales on their northbound migration from the Baja Peninsula to Alaska’s Bering Strait and beyond.

Come experience the wonders and charm of the 25th annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival, with an array of events taking place throughout the coastal towns of Tofino and Ucluelet and the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
Have you ever wondered what is really going on underneath the water? We have the answers at Spring Spawn, Sex and the Sea, a titillating and stimulating theatrical experience for your brain. The 25th annual Pacific Rim Whale Festival is just weeks away and festival organizers and committee members are busy planning and getting ready for one heck of a good time. Our mission is “to inspire, educate & entertain” and we are jumping in with this early event scheduled for Saturday, February 19th. The $25 ticket includes food, music theatre and laughs guaranteed! All proceeds go directly to the Education Committee and Events. You don’t want to miss this one!

As for during the nine days of the festival itself? Well there are so many wonderful new events and an amazing range of speakers and experts! On Saturday, March 26th we are combining experts, local west coasters and colourful characters to discuss “25 years of Sea Change”. This panel discussion will touch on many of the issues concerning area residents, talk about success stories in conservation and allow attendees to ask questions and share their thoughts. Want to take beautiful pictures? There will be a Nature Walk with a professional photographer helping you get the most out of your camera. Consider yourself a foodie? A new event is being created with you in mind! The ever-evolving Calendar of Events is online now with updates daily as we confirm and plan events.

And lets not forget our favourite anchor events! The Wickaninnish Gala, Chowder Chowdown, Barnacle Blues, Sweet Indulgence and Martini Migration are all back with a bang! After an amazingly successful first year, the Winter Wave Photo Showdown is also back, put on by the Ucluelet Chamber of Commerce this event challenges local photographers to capture all the beauty and power of nature and the attendees get to reap the results and enjoy a cocktail evening at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort.
But most importantly, the Pacific Rim Whale Festival can’t run without its volunteers. There are board positions available including the volunteer coordinators for Tofino and Ucluelet and an events coordinator for Tofino, as well as committee members needed for some of our big events. We will be making the call for our army of volunteers in early February. Watch for us to be out and about this month in Tofino and Ucluelet. Alternatively, volunteer applications are available on the festival website or interested volunteers can also sign up at the festival’s new Ucluelet office. Like whales without water - we couldn’t survive without our volunteers!

The new permanent office space is located in Ucluelet at 250 Main Street, behind the CIBC and across from Ukee Dogs. We are sharing this space with local contractor Jason Niles. Watch for the fascinating things to come from this space. During the festival the “Sensory Experience”, formally known as the Media Lounge, will be showing at this new location. The hours are Monday - Friday, 10am - 6pm. Feel free to stop by to discuss the events and sponsorship opportunities, sign up to be a volunteer or just say hi!
