Tofino in October 2010

October 2010 brings us the O'Neill Cold Water Classic, the Queen of the Peak all women surf comp, the Tofino Film festival and other events in Tofino.

the letter 'I'It’s going to be an exciting month this October in Tofino. The O’Neill Cold Water Classic is returning to our shores for the Canadian leg of the only surfing competition in Canada that is sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals. With last year’s win of Tofino surfer Peter Devries on his home surf, the buzz is growing in this town at the end of the road.

But all that excitement aside, there are a few other things happening in Tofino this October:

Guerilla Film Competition, 2010

This is the third year that the Guerilla Film Competition is taking place in Tofino as part of the Annual Tofino Film Festival. Over the last two years we have seen some hilarious, interesting, and moving amateur films all made by local people in the communities of Ucluelet and Tofino. People have a month to make a short film - under 5 minutes- any genre (keeping it clean) and then those films are screened at Shelter Restaurant on October 27th from 8 pm onwards. It is a great night that culminates with a big cash prize for the first place filmmakers and great second and third prizes offered by Shelter. The deadline to submit a film this year is October 25th. The film must be in DVD format (no movie projects please) and have people's contact information on it. The best place to drop off your film is at Mermaid Tales Bookshop or you can mail the DVD to: Guerilla Film Competition, PO Box 709, Tofino V0R 2Z0.

Canoe Steaming

The ancient art of steaming and shaping a Nuu-chah-nulth cedar dugout canoe, hosted by master canoe carver Joe Martin on North Chesterman Beach in front of the Carving Shed on Saturday Oct 9 from 1 to 5 pm. A large fire will be built to heat carefully selected stones to use in the steaming. The canoe is filled with water, and when the stones are judged to be hot enough, they will be moved into the water of the canoe. The canoe will then be covered to allow the steam to warm and soften the cedar wood of the canoe. The shaping then begins, as Joe Martin and helpers begin to manipulate the shape to make it stronger and give it a shape that will cut through the rough west coast waters. Joe Martin is a master canoe carver and has carved close to fifty canoes over his career with his brothers Carl Martin, who carved the Cold Water Classic trophy, and the late Billy Martin. He has also traveled to seven countries, speaking to thousands to educate people on his culture, including the United Nations and European Parliament. Come join this most amazing and ancient process of the famed Clayoquot Canoe.

Queen of the Peak

It’s commonly agreed that the Tofino area has as a high proportion of women in the water compared to other surfing hot spots. It seems only logical then that it’s time for a contest focused entirely on local talented females. Queen of the Peak will run Oct. 8, the day before the start of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic in Tofino. At press time, there were already 50 women pre-registered for the contest in both the longboard and shortboard divisions.
Come out and support local female surfers as they kick off an event that organizers hope will grow into its own Association of Surfing Professionals event in the years to come.

The Tofino Hospital Foundation Fundraiser

A night of murder, mystery, and fundraising is happening in Tofino in early October. The Tofino Hospital Foundation is planning the Oct. 2 event in order to raise funds to go towards a portable ultrasound device for the local hospital’s emergency room.

Tickets are available for $100 at Wildside Booksellers and Mermaid Tales Bookshop in Tofino, and at Place TV in Ucluelet. Anyone not able to attend who still wishes to make a contribution towards the machine can contact McGinnis at 250-725-3308.

The event gets going at 6:30pm and it sounds like it will be an evening full of intrigue and fun.
