Tofino First Nations cultural experiences
tofino business | first nations articles
The First Nations people in the Tofino area are the original locals. The Tla-o-qui-aht, Ahousaht and Hesquiaht are only a few of the tribes who have called Clayoquot Sound home for thousands of years. There are three main First Nations communities in the area: Esowista is located on Long Beach, Opitsaht is on Meares Island, just across the water from downtown Tofino, and Ahousaht is roughly 10 miles by water from Tofino, on Flores Island.
There are a growing number of native culture activities offered by the local First Nations people in Tofino. Dugout canoe trips area recent addition, and there is a beautiful trail hosted by the Ahousaht people called the “Walk-the-Wildside Trail”. There are plans for a cultural center at Esowista, and a First Nations Booking center in Tofino, for whale-watching, fishing and canoeing. Look forward to more in the future!
For those that wish to enjoy the hot springs under the stars there is a lodge, a bed & breakfast and a campground. For a truly unique experience, stay at the Innchanter, a floating bed and breakfast moored in the bay. No matter how long your visit to the hot springs might be it’s a good idea to take along lots of water, warm clothes and a pair of good walking shoes.
