R.A.A.T.U. – Random Acts of Art in Tofino & Ucluelet: April 8-16, 2011

the letter 'D'Do you ever get the urge to just burst into song? Act like a pirate? Decorate a tree with playing cards?
Of course you do! Music, movies, dance, painting, performance... art forms a huge part of our lives. It inspires us, grounds us, challenges us and broadens our horizons.
So watch for R.A.A.T.U. -- Random Acts of Art in Tofino and Ucluelet -- during the tenth annual B.C. Arts & Culture Week, April 8-16, 2011.

Throughout our towns you'll find "unexpected pleasures in unexpected places." Maybe a poem in the Co-op line, or a song at SoBo during lunch. An impromptu recitation at the post office, origami birds in a bush, a chalk sketch on the sidewalk... anything's possible as our towns' artists pull out the stops to surprise and entertain.

We'll have local artists Lisa Jewell and Daniela Petosa workshopping in the schools. Tofino Botanical Gardens will hop aboard the R.A.A.T.U. train. Bandmeisters Jessie Taylor and Natacha Radojevic are already tuning up. Other places to watch: Mermaid Tales, Wild Heather, Studio One Hair, and many more. Spinning fire, raving bards, emoting actors, happenings of all sorts... who knows what you'll find during R.A.A.T.U.?

And you're part of it too! Decorate your car, paint your spouse's face, play your harp in the park. Put on your artiest outfit and jig down Main Street. Whittle a sculpture in your front yard. We're challenging every child, woman, man and dog on the West Coast to celebrate being alive with your own Random Acts, big or small. Art is chirping away in all of us, and it takes just a little creativity and joy to hatch it.

Imagine two whole towns going art crazy for one spring week. Do your thing with family and friends, or be the Lone Ranger of Art. Then come wrap it all up with a giant community celebration at the Tofino Community Hall on Saturday, April 25, 2009. We're talking performance galore, live music, dance, raffles and auctions, with all proceeds going to the Pacific Rim Summer Festival.
