Tofino Whale festival calendar of events

March 14-22, 2009

The letter 'W'With a significant focus on marine ecosystems and coastal life education, the Pacific Rim Whale Festival celebrates the continued protection and annual return of migrating Pacific grey whales to the coastal waters of the communities of Tofino, Ucluelet and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. An estimated 20,000 grey whales make the journey each year from the Baja Peninsula’s breeding and calving lagoons in Mexico toward their summer feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi Seas near the Arctic. The migrating grey whales join resident grey whales, orcas, humpbacks and the occasional minke that can be seen in the Pacific Northwest waters any time of year.

Marking the official opening of the area’s prime whale watching season, The Pacific Rim Whale Festival includes a variety of cultural, culinary, musical, family-friendly and educational events.

The following is the calendar of events for the Pacific Rim Whale festival 2009:

Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve
11am •
with Dr. Alan McMillan

Whaling was a central activity in Nuu-Chah-Nulth culture and chiefly power was strongly associated with whaling success. Evidence of whaling extends thousands of years into the past. This talk will present recent archaeological research in Barkley Sound, at several major village sites, done in cooperation with three Nuu-Chah-Nulth First Nations. It will focus particularly on archaeological evidence for whaling in ancient times, but will also discuss the importance of whaling as known from later ethnographic and historic sources. Images associated with whaling, particularly the Thunderbird as the hunter of whales, are pervasive in Nuu-Chah-Nulth art. This talk will briefly discuss whaling imagery in the art, noting the continuing use of these traditional themes in new and exciting ways by contemporary Nuu-Chah-Nulth artists. Dr. Alan McMillan is the author of five books and numerous academic articles. He is an adjunct professor in the Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University and is faculty emeritus at Douglas College in New Westminster. Much of his research has involved the Nuu-Chah-Nulth people of western Vancouver Island and he has conducted archaeological fieldwork in Barkley Sound since 1991.

thursday, march 20, 2009Killer Whales: Top Predators At Risk

Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre,
Pacific Rim National Park Reserve
11 am •
with Andrea Buckman,
Department of Fisheries & Oceans

It’s what’s inside that counts! How do nutrition and contaminants affect the overall health of marine mammals? British Columbia’s resident killer whales are among the most PCB-contaminated marine mammals in the world. At the top of the food chain, and because killer whales have high lipid content and have long lives, they are prone to accumulating high concentrations of these nasty contaminants. Little is known about the effects in free-ranging killer whale populations, however, levels of PCBs in resident orcas exceed the adverse effects level established for harbour seals, suggesting that killer whales in this region are at risk for toxic effects. This presentation outlines the physiological and biological factors influencing contaminant concentrations and characterizes the relationship between high levels of persistent contaminants and the effects observed using several unique biomarker tools. Thanks to Parks Canada.

thursday, march 20, 2009Marine Mammal 911

Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre,
Pacific Rim National Park Reserve
1 pm •
with Lisa Spaven,
marine mammal biologist and response coordinator
Department of Fisheries & Oceans

There are 31 species of marine mammals that occur in British Columbian waters, nearly half of which are listed under the Species at Risk Act as Endangered, Threatened or Special Concern. In many cases, little is known about the environmental and human factors impacting marine mammals. To help recover these populations, a better understanding of the threats they face in our waters is needed. The British Columbia Marine Mammal Response Network (BCMMRN) aims to assist marine mammals in distress, as possible, take action in the case of inappropriate or illegal human activities, and track threats such as exotic or emergent disease, contamination, harassment, ship strikes, entanglement in debris and fishing gear. BCMMRN is a collaborative program between government agencies, research, conservation and outreach groups, First Nations, wildlife rescue organizations and citizens. Come learn more about the marine mammal species in British Columbia, how to contribute by reporting your marine mammal encounters, and how to become involved in marine mammal response efforts.

Musical percussion & gumboot dancing performance for all ages!

Marimba Muzuva’s happy and hypnotic music has been a crowd-pleaser since the early 1990’s. Since that time the band has carved a prominent name for itself in the West Coast folk and world music scene by playing a wide variety of performances & getting audiences up on their feet! The music has a power all it’s own: vibrant, interactive, and percussive. Infectious melodies and pulsing rhythms of Zimbabwean music, hand-crafted instruments, visually dynamic performances, energetic dance… all in a spirit of celebration!

Why do eager Canadian crowds gather to experience marimba music? What possible link could a group of musicians from Canada's wet and windy coast have with the exotic, sun-dappled music of Zimbabwe? The answer can be found in the music itself. It makes the world smaller, there becomes here, and everyone connects - with each other, with the rhythm of the earth and with the nurturing energy of the sun. In fact, it is impossible to hear the sound of the marimbas and NOT be transplanted to the sun and colour of distant land. Let’s go there!

*Those who participated in the morning workshop may want to join in. The second workshop will take place on Saturday from 11am-12:30pm*

Absolutely everyone welcome!
