Tofino Carver Dan Holtendorp - Vargas Dan
Carver Dan Holtendorp has called the waters of Clayoquot Sound home for the last 14 years. He is known to many as Vargas Dan, from the time that he spent living on one of the rugged outer beaches of Vargas Island. Originally from south western Ontario, Dan escaped his life as an auto body man to head west and look for some greater meaning. It was here that Dan first felt the inspirations of artistic expression, urged on by the natural beauty that surrounded his life.Largely self-taught through the process of experimentation and determination Dan has constantly challenged himself to learn more. His intention is to always be pushing his own personal limits.
His art varies in content from fantasy to realism and a combination of both. He has worked with nearly every medium from driftwood furniture and dugout canoe carving to painting, drawing and most recently woodcarving. His mentors are master carver Henry Nola and Nuu-Cha-Nulth canoe carver Joe Martin.
Dan’s art can be found at the Eagle Aerie Gallery and at the Tofitian Café in Tofino.
