Tofino Artist Paul Grignon

Paul Grignon was born in Toronto, Canada on May 5, 1948. He was always drawing and painting as a child, and began working in oils at the age of thirteen. Self taught in the technical skills of painting landscapes and still life realistically, his “artist soul” was awakened during a year at Toronto’s New School of Art, where he immersed himself in figure drawing up to 6 hrs per day and experimented with abstract expressionist painting.

In 1973, inspired by the “back to the land” movement, Paul ventured west to British Columbia, and soon began hand-building a home on Gabriola Island. He worked at treeplanting and construction as well as commercial and fine art for several years to support his wife and four children, until physical injury forced him to try to make a full-time living from his art.

He began in 1982, with a year spent at a local museum building a diorama exhibit of native life. His creative versatility and restless drive to learn has always led him to take on a wide variety of artistic projects including murals, theatre sets, newspaper writing, commercial art, digital imagery and website design and video, often in the service of environmental causes. Simultaneously, his fine art was exhibited and sold in several galleries across Canada.

Paul sees divinity and idealism in the beauty of landscape and seeks to express it with his brush.
