Tofino Artist: Lyn DesRosier

L

Lyn DesRosiers is a local artist, who is very much inspired by the spirit of the land and its people. Beginning with drawing and specifically dry pastel on black paper at art school in Quebec, Lyn earned a degree in fine arts.

In 1997 Lyn felt a calling to start heading west. She first made it as far as Canmore where she lived for a few years before continuing on to Tofino and Clayoquot Sound.

Her time here has been very much a journey of discovery. Through such experiences as living in a Tipi in the forest and traveling much of the waters of Clayoquot Sound, Lyn developed a desire to begin working with wood.

Meeting with legendary carver Henry Nola was where the carving path truly began. She became his apprentice learning the craft of woodcarving and the art of perseverance. Although Henry was able to give her technical wisdom it wasn’t until she met her present partner Joe Martin that she really felt the inspiration of the spirit within the wood. New meaning was given to her work through this relationship and the window to the spiritual realm that it opened.

Her work is all done by hand in traditional manners. Its design is a mix of first nations inspiration and creative thinking. Lyn works primarily in the local woods found here in Clayoquot Sound.

Lyn DesRosier’s work can be seen at Enchanted Gift Shop on Main Street in Tofino.
