Tofino Artist Cathy White
As a child I was influenced by both my Mother and Father in the Arts.
My Dad was a commercial artist and my Mom was a sculptor.
from Winnipeg to North Vancouver when I was young, and in 1978 I graduated
from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Education—Art
Major. At this time my husband, Kim and I moved to Tofino, on Vancouver
Island, and I taught Art at the Ucluelet Secondary School.
As our family
grew (we now have four beautiful children) I decided I wanted to open
a studio at home. In 1988 I set up a pottery studio which I called “Elements”.
Over the next few years I attended several workshops at Malaspina College
and organized two workshops here in Tofino with Bob Kingsmill. Bob’s
work and enthusiasm for clay gave me confidence to pursue my dream
of being a potter.
My work is influenced by the incredible West Coast environment as
well as my interest in the Healing Arts. In 1989 I began taking classes
in energy work and
in 2001 became a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner. I mention this because
pottery and energy work are so interconnected: I use elements of the earth,
air, fire, and water in my work. The hand built and wheel thrown pieces
I create either
have symbols of the West Coast or healing elements, such as Reiki or the Chakras.
Each hand built plaque or tile piece I make has its own energy and is unique;
only rarely do I make one that is exactly the same as another.
It is a great pleasure to me to have visitors enjoy my work and to
know that it is in people’s homes all over the world.
