Tofino artist Carol Schulz
Painter, Tofino, BC
Born in Germany shortly after World War II, Carol immigrated to North America in the late 1950s and has lived in Tofino, British Columbia (Canada) since 1991. She is a citizen of both Canada and the United States, holds advanced degrees in Anthropology and Epidemiology/Public Health, has taught at university, has conducted private sector biomedical and survey research, and has managed world-wide projects in computerized medical data systems.
Although mostly self-taught in the medium of watercolour, Carol originally studied art in Illinois (USA) over 30 years ago. Since retirement, she has again taken up the brushes. “It was a whole new ballgame painting in watercolours! I was used to oils in my earlier art work, but became sensitive to the solvents. Now I find myself thinking in reverse in order to paint my beloved landscapes using watercolours.
“What started me painting again was the move from the city to the intense natural beauty of the Pacific Rim seashore and adjacent forests. This part of North America is one of the five most beautiful places on earth. Living in such a blessed domain MUST inspire you, or you have no soul! Mastering the expressions of that inspiration is going to be a lifelong endeavor – one that I cherish and look forward to every time I confront a new white sheet of paper. I love it when I paint and it’s because I paint what I love. This can’t be considered work. It’s simply too much fun!”
Carol’s works are available at the Shorewind Gallery in Tofino, British Columbia, and the Northport Landing Gallery in Northport, Maine. Meet Carol Schulz during Artists in Action as part of the Pacific Rim Whale Festival March 14 - March 22,
