Tofino Artist Cal Kalkan

Carver

Cal was born in 1949, in Chilmi Turkey, near Istanbul. He moved to Canada in 1968, settling in Winnipeg and then making his way to Edmonton where he remained until 1979.

After that Cal traveled westward eventually finding himself in the coastal village of Tofino. The culture and surroundings of this then quiet town inspired Cal towards artistic expression. He began to explore and study painting and drawing, using oils, acrylics, water colours, pencil and charcoal.

In 1990, after moving up the westcoast to Catface, he picked up some rusty carving tools a friend had given him and thus this body of work began. The likeness of Henry Nolla is wonderfully eminent.
