Tofino Artist & Photographer Adrian Dorst

Adrian Dorst is widely known, both in Canada and abroad, for his photographic portrayal of wilderness and wildlife. In the past two decades, his work has appeared in posters, calendars and environmental brochures as well as in numerous books and magazines. He is also a frequent contributor to Beautiful British Columbia magazine.

He is perhaps best known for his book Clayoquot; On the Wild Side, published by the Western Canada Wilderness Committee in 1990. Written by Cameron Young, this highly successful book show-cased a collection of 144 of his most evocative images portraying the splendour of wilderness in Clayoquot Sound and Vancouver Island’s west coast. Though a regional book, it sold 10,000 copies.

A new book called The Enchanted Coast; North America’s Pacific Rainforest, is his latest project. Portraying the magnificence of the Pacific coast from the coast redwoods in northern California to the fog-shrouded shores of Prince William Sound in Alaska in both photographs and text, the book is scheduled to be on store shelves in both the US and Canada by mid-October.

Adrian lives in Tofino, where his expertise as an avid birdwatcher and naturalist makes him a sought-after guide. A self-taught ornithologist, he co-authored Birds of Pacific Rim National Park (1976). Adrian is also an accomplished writer, carver, and sculptor.
