October in Tofino

by Adam Buskard

the letter 'W'

Well everyone welcome to fall. September was amazing, lets hope it carries on through October for us. This is the time of year where we pick up that activity that we were too busy for in the summer or consider a new one. Be sure to check the community calendar for all the Parks and Rec Commissions activites.
Guerilla Film Contest

After last years successful turnout, the Tofino Film Festival and Shelter restaurant will again be hosting the second annual Guerilla Film Contest! Be a part of the action! As part of the festival, local filmmakers are invited to submit entries to the Guerilla Gilm Contest, open to all West Coast residents.

Short films between 3 and 5 minutes on any theme submitted using dvd must be received by October 15 at Mermaid Tales Bookstore in Tofino to be eligible for consideration. The only thing the organizers ask is that the entries are clean, so no pornography, overly suggestive language or slasher flicks.

Theres help out there for prospective filmmakers as well who might need a little information to get going. Visit the Tofino Film Festival blog at  tofinoguerillafilm.blogspot.com for more information. The Guerilla Film Contest premiers Tuesday, October 20.

The Tofino Film Festival

The Tofino Film Festival turns 12 this year and is more vibrant than ever. Originally put together by Joe James, his credit card, and a vague desire to have a cultural event in Tofino during the shoulder season, the festival  is now hosted by the non-profit Tofino Film Festival Society. The festivals mandate is to bring excellent movies to the West Coast, but the organizers are also trying hard to continue with the tradition that was started by Joe over a decade ago. This years lineup for the four day festival is shaping up nicely with something for everybody from musical documentaires to kids films. As with so many of the cultural events that we enjoy here on the coast The Tofino Film Festival is  deeply indebted to its sponsors and supporters who have contributed everything from hotel rooms to flights. The Tofino Film Festival Runs from October 22-25.

PRAS Art Show

The Pacific Rim Arts Society presents wave, an art exhibition featuring local artists. The show runs October 26, 27 and 28th in the Harbour Lounge at the Weigh West Resort. Listen to live music at the reception on the evening of the 26th starting at 7pm. There will be a wide range of work including sculpture, carving, painting, photography ceramics, fabrics and more.
