Tofino: Goodbye 2006

As we watch 2006 come to a close I'm a little confused as what to think of this year that just passed. It seemed to have been a lesson in extremes and adversity for Tofino and an opportunity to see us react to them. My feet are still numb from the walk on the snow covered I beach I just took, yet I remember in August using air-conditioning for the very first time. From drought to deluge and sun to storm it seems nothing can be taken for granted in a Tofino day.

I think that 2006 will be remembered for some time to come as the year Tofino officially lost its innocence. I think we crossed a few milestones; the water crisis, leaky condos, star sightings, the building of the great wall of Chestermans, boil water advisories and tsunami warnings. I've always thought of the BC Packers building and Pacific Rim Campground to be the canaries in our coal mine and that once those properties were developed there was gonna little that could surprise us.Now as both of those come closer to being developed it sets my mind swirling with wonder and anticipation. I hope that in these next crucial years in Tofino's development we can come together as a community and be sure to stand up for the 'Tofino to be'. Merry Christmas to all and Happy Holidays.
