Tofino Natural Heritage Society - The Eik Street Tree

Tofino Natural Heritage Society: Eik Stree Tree Auction

T

The Tofino Natural Heritage Society (TNHS) announced the start of an engineering project to brace the now famous 800 year old western red cedar known as "the Eik tree" at the entrance to downtown Tofino. The society is fundraising for steel rods and guy wires, among other costs.

To help raise money for this project, the society has invited prominent artists to depict the tree and to donate the artwork to the society for an auction in Tofino on August 11, 2002. So far, 23 artists have committed work to the auction and the society has begun cataloguing the auction items on their website.

For thirty days beginning July 10, remote auction bids will be received by fax bid form (printable from the website). The art will go to public auction on Aug 11 with the highest bid received prior to midnight on August 10 setting the opening bids for the live auction.

Works by artists including Mark Hobson, Robert Bateman, Graham Herbert, Daniel Izzard, Fred Peters and Josie Fletcher have been committed in a variety of media from watercolour and oil to glass and carving.

For information or to make a donation contact the TNHS in Tofino at 250.725-3252 or online at www.tofinonaturalheritage.org
