Unify through Yoga
by Dawn Batenchuk, Tofino
The nature of all life continues on, ebbing and flowing constantly
changing and adapting. Beneath this unfolding beauty of life there
lies an underlying rhythm, a breath so to speak, a unifying truth.
Through the practice of yoga one might tune into that breath of life
within themselves and bring harmony to the mind, body and spirit.
Yoga means "Unify" and is designed to stretch, cleanse
and center the body. The first step and basis of experiencing yoga
is breath, for our breathing symbolises life and our connection to
it. It is through the awareness of breathing that we can make our first
steps towards a calmer, clearer state of mind. "Pranayama" is
the term used to describe breathing techniques that are designed to
cleanse, purify, tone the body and enable the concentration of the
meditative yoga experience.
The next step forward is the union of breath and "Asanas",
or body postures, which combined ease the mind toward peace and clarity.
Daily practice and a keen ear to the body's needs is an easy
route towards health and happiness. The more limber your body is the
more vibrant and young you feel. So stretch and open up to the enjoyment
and freedom of a loose body and eased mind. Listen to the rhythm of
life and relax into it.
