tofino golf - sand shots

Tofino Golf: Sand Shots

by Keith "Gibby" Gibson, C.P.G.A Head Professional, Tofino

O

Once a few concepts are understood the, the Sandshot can be a relatively easy golf shot.

Greenside Bunker: A sand wedge is designed to bounce off the sand once the club has been set correctly in your hands. The flange on the bottom of the club is designed to help with the necessary procedure.

Concept: Once you understand that the hands must not be allowed to break down through impact, your next step is to decide how much sand is necessary to take as well as the length of swing desire to produce the speed needed to create the shot. In general, I suggest you maintain a consistent swing and vary the amount of sand you take such as short shot - 2 inches of sand, mid shot - 1 inch of sand, long shot - 1/2 inch of sand.

Tip: Remember to always follow through!

When done correctly, the entire club follows through the clubbed, shaft and handle. Practice hitting shots taking similar swings but different amount of sand. You will start to get used to the distance the balls travel. but be sure that before you strike the ball that you know where your finish is.

Good luck and come and see me in Tofino for help with your game!
